Quick Review of Flowmeters

June 30th, 2008

Flowmeters are devices used to calculate
the linear, nonlinear, mass or volumetric flow rate of liquid &
gas. In order to choose the right flow meter, you must have an accurate
analysis of the requirements for the particular task. A full evaluation of the medium
to be measured (whether gas or liquid) must be conducted and a thorough review
of the installation must be made before any further action can be contemplated.

There are numerous parameters that must be
identified before any selection and installation. Specific points requiring
identification are process temperature and pressure; flow rate; chemical
compatibility of wetted parts; if liquid, is it water to be measured; if not,
what is the viscosity of the liquid; and do you require rate measurement or
totalization?

Flowmeters are made to measure several
different mediums and the state of these mediums. Below are just a few of the
more well-known flowmeter types (not all by any means):

Peak flow meters: are used by patients with
asthma and other lung diseases. This meter measures the volume of air patients
take into their lungs. These are readily available on line from various
suppliers.

Mass flow meters: are used to measure gas
flow. These are quite common.

Water flow meters are flow meters for measuring
flow rates of water in channels, tubes, partially filled pipes, streams, or
rivers.

The more you understand your particular process, the easier
it will be to identify the correct flowmeter for your task.
